Data Centre
- Physical Facility
- Hosting for a group of networked servers
- Own power, cooling & networking infrastructure
Collection of data centre is region (connected to each otherdirectly)
Regions
- Geographical area on the planet
- One but usually more data centres connected with low latency network
- Location for your service
- Some services are available only in certain regions
- some services are global services, as such are not assigned (deployed in specific regions)
- Globally available with 50+ regions
- Special government regions(US DOD Centre, US Gov virgra, etc.. )
- Special partnered regions (China East, China North)
Availablity Zones
- Regional feature
- Grouping of physical separate facilities
- Designed to protect from data centre failures
- If the zone goes down others continue working
If we are running 2 virtual machines at the same time with different availability then if one region fails other will keep on running
Region Pair
- Each region is paired with another region making it a region pair
- Region pairs are static and cannot be choosen
- Each pair resides within the same geography (Except in brazil south)
- Physical isolation with at least 300 miles distance (when possible)
- Some services have platform provided replication
- Planned updates across the pairs
- Data residency maintained for disaster recovery
All regions and region pairs are grouped into geography
Geographies
- Discrete market
- Typically contains two (or) more regions
- Ensures data residency, Sovereignty, resiliency, and compliance requirements are met
- Fault-tolerant to protect from region-wide failures
- Broken up into areas
- 1. Americans
- 2. Europe
- 3. Asia pacific
- 4. Middle East and Africa
- Each region belongs only to one geography
